Hand Therapy

Hand therapy is the practice used by physiotherapists on the upper extremities of the body. The upper extremities consist of the hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulder girdles. Hand therapy is a specialized rehabilitation program focused on enhancing mobility and inducing quick recovery. Since hand therapy is very specific it requires continuous learning and high levels of education.

Hand therapists can treat injuries from overuse and repetitive motion such as tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome. They can also treat injures created by accidents such as fractures, amputations, nerve damage, and much more.

During a session, the hand therapist will assess the injury and plan the rehabilitation program needed. Within this treatment, the hand therapist will work with the patient to create a continuum care plan to achieve the highest level of recovery. Patients are often given a treatment regime to do on their own outside the treatment room to foster quick recovery.
