Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga is a very gentle type of yoga using props such as bolsters, pillows or mats to support the body in the particular poses being done.   It is therapeutic and fosters a deep sense of relaxation to allow the body to rest, restore and heal.

Restorative yoga usually begins with a warm-up followed by a series of poses or postures that are held for up to 15 minutes.  The body is supported in each pose such as the legs against a wall or the upper body or head on a pillow.  A part of the body may be covered with a blanket for additional comfort.  The basic concept is to allow the body to fully be supported, to rest, to relax.  Restorative yoga stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, the system which helps restore the body back to balance.  It slows the heart, stimulates digestion, and dilates the blood vessels.

Restorative yoga is beneficial for many issues including,  dealing with depression and anxiety, injury recovery, overcoming illness.  There are a number of yoga studios and centers in Victoria that offer restorative yoga classes.  Most of these facilities provide a variety of yoga options; one center also offers Pilates classes as well.  A class is usually about 45 minutes to 1 hour long.  Private classes are often available.
