Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathic Medicine is a system of medicine based on the concept that giving the body a very diluted form of a substance which creates the symptoms will stimulate the body’s inherent healing ability.  The word homeopathic is derived from the words ‘homeo’ meaning like or similar and ‘pathic’ meaning ‘disease’.  Homeopathic medicine treats the whole person and therefore assesses mental, physical, physiological, and emotional factors.  The basic principles behind homeopathy are:

Law of similar:   substance which in large doses cause symptoms can be administered in very small amounts to cure those symptoms

Single remedy:   single medicine should deal with all symptoms, physical, emotional and mental

Minimum dose:   practitioner gives dose to assess its effect and the dose is very small, very diluted

Homeopathic medicine can be traced back to the late 1870’s when German physician Dr. Samuel Christian Hahnemann discovered that quinine which was used to treat malaria actually caused malaria-like symptoms.  He formulated a basic idea that a substance which caused symptoms in a healthy person could cure a person with the very same symptoms.  He began experimenting with other substances.  But noticed as the compounds were crude there were side effects.  He began to dilute the substances.  This process called ‘potentization’ would form the basis of homeopathic medicine.  Essentially a substance is diluted then succused or agitated in order to increase the energetic force of the substance.

Today homeopathic medicine is practised world-wide.   In Canada, a homeopathic physician must go through a vigorous 3 year educational program with clinical experience.

A typical session is 45 minutes to 1 hour and would entail a consultation and assessment of all the symptoms a client is experiencing so that the practitioner can determine which homeopathic medicine would be appropriate.   Follow up sessions would include assessing improvement, dosage and any other issues.

Homeopathic medicine can be beneficial for a wide variety of conditions.  Here are some though the list is not limited to these:  allergies, cold and flu, respiratory conditions, thyroid issues, arthritis, digestive disorders, migraines, depression, chronic ear infections, morning sickness, teething, colic, mononucleosis, pregnancy & post-partum conditions.
