Ear Seeds

Ear seeds, also called auricular acupuncture, are a form of traditional Chinese medicine. This therapy is used in the treatment of pain, obesity, addiction and mood disorders. Tiny seeds of the vaccaria plant are placed on specific acupuncture points on the ear and taped in place.  Pressing on the seeds stimulates a related point in the body, which helps reduce specific symptoms.

Acupuncturists view the ear as an upside down fetus, with the head being on the earlobe and the spine extending up the curve of the ear.  The entire body is represented on the ear, providing an effective way to treat areas difficult to access or too painful.  There are up to 200 acupuncture points on the outer ear, each relating to an anatomic area of body function such as heart, knees and stomach.  The center of the earlobe is called the “eye point.” This is the traditional site for piercing the ears.  In fact, pirates began piercing that point to improve their eyesight when scanning the horizon for ships or land.

Ear seeds may vary from plant seeds to tiny metal beads.  Taped over specific points, they provide enough light acupuncture pressure to enhance their effect.  Patients are taught how to squeeze the seeds for stronger stimulation as needed.  Ear seeds can be left in place for 1-2 weeks.

Ear seeds have a long history in Chinese medicine and are mentioned in ancient Chinese medical textbooks.  Today, ear seeds or auricular therapy, is available through Acupuncturists and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners.
